Food Preparation & Nutrition
Learning to cook equips students with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to lead healthy, independent and successful lives; it is one of the most valuable life skills a school can teach. We are proud that every student leaves Southfield with a wide range of practical cooking skills and a love of the culinary arts.
In Food lessons, students develop high-level practical skills and resilience in a safe environment, act on feedback, and learn to follow and adapt recipes with an understanding of food choices such as veganism, allergies and healthy eating. They study the principles of nutrition and learn to plan, cook, test and evaluate high-quality dishes for a wide range of users. Through cooking food from different countries, they explore multicultural perspectives and develop respect for people from a range of cultural backgrounds.
Our values run through the curriculum. We want students to Be Ready to make confident, informed choices as consumers, to Be Respectful of the diversity of our community and its food cultures, and to Be Responsible for reducing food waste, starting with their own practice. Our students take pride in what they create and are Proud to be Southfield.
